Do Weeds Grow Through Artificial Grass?

Do Weeds Grow Through Artificial Grass?images

People ask us all the time: Do weeds grow through artificial grass or artificial turf?

The short answer is yes. Weeds can grow through artificial turf. However, when properly installed this will almost never happen.

Weed prevention is one of the reasons here at Apex Turf, we focus so much on the foundation. The base plays a huge role in keeping your new lawn stable, and free from weeds trying to push up from the soil underneath.

Ground Prep is The Key

Most weed problems in artificial grass come from shortcuts taken before the turf is ever installed.

Despite what you may read on the internet, artificial grass should never be installed directly on dirt, no matter what kind of soil you have.

The compacted quarter minus base is one of the most important steps in preventing weeds under artificial grass. This crushed rock material compacts tightly, creating a dense barrier that makes it very difficult for weeds to grow up from the soil below.

Beyond weed control, a properly compacted quarter minus base also improves drainage and keeps the turf from shifting or sinking.

Notice I haven’t said anything about weed barriers?

What About Weed Barriers?

Weed barriers (sometimes called a weed membrane) are often recommended online as a must have for artificial grass, but in reality they do very little to stop weed growth. We never use nor recommend weed barriers.

Weeds do not grow up through a properly compacted base. They grow from organic material, windblown seeds, or gaps created by poor installation.

Fabric weed barriers can actually create new problems over time. They can shift, tear, or wrinkle. In some cases, barriers can even trap moisture or create uneven areas under the turf.

A well prepared, tightly compacted crushed rock base is far more effective at stopping weeds. It eliminates the organic material weeds need to survive and removes an extra layer that can fail. When the base is built correctly, a weed barrier simply is not necessary.

Our Install Process – How We Stop Weeds at the Foundation

Here at Apex Turf, we install every project to cut off growth from below – before the turf ever gets rolled out. It takes a bit more time, but it saves you (and us!) trouble down the track.

Step 1: Chemical Pre-Treatment

About five days before we start the installation, we treat the ground with a chemical weed killer. This prepares the soil and kills off roots that would try to come back later. It’s a simple step, but it wipes out the leftover growth hiding under old natural grass.

Step 2: Ground Removal and Grading

Once the pre-treatment is done, we remove the dead grass, dead weeds, and loose dirt. We scrape the ground down until it’s clean and even. After that, we grade the area so water flows away from the home and/or in keeping with the drainage plan.

Step 3: The Quarter-Minus Barrier (The Key Defense)

The next step is the most important part of stopping weeds from growing through artificial grass. We bring in a layer of “quarter minus”. This is crushed rock that has been screened, with every rock less than 1/4″ in size.

This layer helps your yard in three ways:

  1. It builds a strong base, so your turf doesn’t sink over time
  2. It keeps water draining at a steady rate (important if you have pets going potty)
  3. It creates a dense barrier that stops weeds from pushing up from the soil below

We then use a plate compactor to tightly compact the stone. This step gives us a solid base that allows us to install our artificial grass on with confidence.

Ways to Prevent Weeds from Growing in Turf

Most weed issues in artificial grass come from organic matter building up on top of the turf, not from weeds growing through it. That organic matter breaks down into something that acts like shallow soil. Seeds land in that soil and sprout.

So the goal is to keep the surface clear. Small cleanings go a long way toward keeping weeds out.

Keep It Clean

Over time, leaves, sticks, dust, and pollen will settle on your turf. If this stuff sits for too long, it breaks down and gives weeds a place to grow.

A few easy habits help stop that:

  • Use a leaf blower to clear debris
  • Pick up sticks after strong winds
  • Rinse the turf when dust starts to pile up
  • Don’t let pet waste sit too long

These steps only take a few minutes and make a big difference in the long run. They also keep your turf looking nicer day to day.

Professional Cleaning

Every year or two, it is beneficial to have the turf professionally cleaned and brushed. A professional turf cleaner will pull out compacted dirt, wash the surface, and brush the blades back up. This service usually includes infill replenishment too.

A deep clean keeps the turf fresh, and stops weeds from having a place to grow.

Infill Renewal

Infill settles with time and use. Renewing the infill every two to three years ensures you have fresh and clean matter that doesn’t encourage weed growth.

Infill helps discourage weeds in artificial turf, and also helps keep the blades standing upright, which helps with synthetic turf longevity in general.

How to Handle Weeds That Do Appear

Even with a good installation, Arizona still has dust storms, winds, and long dry spells. Seeds fly everywhere. That means you might still see weeds in fake grass from time to time. These weeds are almost always from seeds that sprout right on the surface, not from below.

Small growth of this kind is easy to manage with a few simple steps.

Natural Solutions

If you want to avoid chemical sprays near pets, kids, or garden areas, you can use natural options for small spots.

The easiest way is simply to pull them out by hand. Since these weeds will be shallow rooted, they will pull out very easily.

Some other natural solutions include:

  • White vinegar
  • Salty water
  • Hot water (not boiling)

These methods take more time and consistency, but they work well for light growth.

Chemical Solutions (Most Effective)

Chemical weed killers are the quickest and most reliable way to deal with weeds in artificial grass. You can spray the weed directly and expect it to dry out fast. Most turf products handle these sprays well, and won’t do any damage to your synthetic lawn.

This is the method we recommend if you have a lot of weeds, and want the easiest solution.

Most often, weeds will only grow in synthetic grass that hasn’t been cleaned regularly. If you are often getting weeds sprout in your turf, the best course of action is a professional clean, and infill replenishment.

The Bottom Line on Weeds and Artificial Grass

So! Do weeds grow through artificial grass? They can, but almost never when the turf is installed correctly and cared for properly.

When artificial grass is installed the right way, it stays cleaner, doesn’t sink, and is far easier to manage than natural grass.

And if a few weeds do pop up over time, they are usually quick and easy to deal with.
